If this is your first time Seeing My face, My name is Holly. I'm a junior, studying early childhood education at Millersville University and if there are two things I'm obsessed with, its theater and spooky season. Now I got the opportunity this semester to direct lights out at the Ville, which is a radio play put on by the Cinemark players. It is based off of the 1930s radio show called lights out. We are specifically doing two shows in an hour long span, circling around the mysteries of the afterlife. Look at what it's like to be a part of theater productions here at Miller's ville, both to act in and direct. Let's go check it out, shall we? The first step was to hold auditions, four people showed up and I automatically love them all. They were provided with scripts, so we just read through them and they had such great little critiques and suggestions that I decided that all four actors who came would be cast and then they would also be cast in two roles. One for the first play, one for the second play, because Lights at the Bill was a compilation of two shows brought together. The next step was rehearsals because we were performing a radio play. They couldn't rely necessarily on how they were acting with their body or facial expressions because no one was going to be able to see them during rehearsals, We work through how they perform lines via their inflection. We met twice a week and I loved getting to know both of the shows through the actor's eyes and I loved getting to know each of the actors personally. So how I viewed a line being portrayed was different from how they viewed it. I love the collaboration between that to see what they thought their actors were thinking in the moment of course, because we were also doing fully, we also had sound effects. So that way the actors could know in the moment when we were recording later on when they needed to pause and be ready for those sudden sound effects. Speaking of sound effects, we had our own foley artist. We work together periodically to get sound effects together like cracking celery for a neck snapping doors opening and closing. We would use different doors to symbolize different creeks for the shows. We would unlock doors, we would jingle keys, we would shake things. She was such a great person to work with and we had so many great sound effects. So it's monday night, the night before we start recording lights out. I'm finalizing the host script because you know, I have to introduce the shows and give commercial breaks. You know when like europe brain dead and you can't really come up with anything creative. I'm starting to feel really sarcastic, so I'm seriously contemplating whether or not to make a reference to tim Burton's frankenweenie. Okay, yeah, don't Yeah, that's going to be in there now. So the next day we recorded the cast, came over to my apartment and we sat in my living room and recorded for about 2.5 hours. We would read over the script for one show, do one solid take and then if we felt like there was anything that needed to be filled in, we would re record, then we repeated for the second show. Later on that week, I got together with a production coordinator as well as our foley artist and we got to work editing the video, we added in all the sound effects in post and we spliced everything together. The only thing left to do was performed the host role live and of course leading up to recording, I did a lot of practicing of lights out at the bill. Why is it so hard to talk in a deep voice if it's not 10:00 AM. Of course a couple hours later I was able to perfect the voice and recorded the host role and then later that day on Halloween night. It's gonna be my first time hearing the whole thing put together. Yeah, I really need to get new batteries for the candles. Let's tune in to lights out the middle of Shall we? Welcome to the set of our Players production of lights out at the bill help. Mhm. Mhm Okay, all theatrics aside, this was a really fun show to direct. Now I'm gonna show you a little teaser trailer for lights out at the ville, enjoy Perhaps you are tuning in as you drive through a windy patch of trees this dark Halloween night or perhaps you are in the safety of your own home listening as you pop eggs in a vat of boiling water or hot dogs wrapped in Pillsbury in the air fryer. This is not a show to listen to while chopping up dinner. First I must ask, is there anyone out there who will notice when you are gone or are you alone? Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. If you're interested in checking anything out related to theater, consider looking at Cinemark players.
