Why I Chose My Major

I am a second year here at R I T. And I am so excited to be talking to you today about my major and how I kind of got toe where I am. I'm from Pennsylvania, originally Southern P A specifically around can around Philly and I am an Alfa C. Delta here in our I t. And I also work for our i t social media. Um, let's just dive right into talking about my major and how I got here and how I switched Rangers and everything like that. So I am in Advertising and Public Relations Major, which is in the College of Liberal Arts here, a r a. T. And I absolutely love, love, love my major. I love my college, and I love how small and tight knit it is. So in high school, so let's backtrack a little bit. Will secretary general of my high school's model U N. Team, and I. I love that. So I came into our a T as he declared International and Global Studies major, which is also in the College of Liberal Arts, but just in a different school, and I really like the program. I felt like I was just continuing on what I had been doing in high school and was never really digging deeper into what I truly wanted and what I wanted to dio going forward with my career. I had taken a couple com classes because I knew that I possibly wanted to add maybe at NPR as a minor or a double major or maybe even my immersion or something like that. It's been so long, but those classes really made me realize Wow, like, this is what I really enjoy learning about. These are my favorite classes, so clearly if these are my favorite classes and my major requirements. Something needs to get so in, Like October of my first semester freshman year, I went to my advisor. I was like, I wanna change my major and I wanna change it at NPR and because I had done some research on the different majors here, and E really realized that, like at NPR was what I wanted. I'm not a huge math person, and I didn't want to take calculus and you learn you learn a lot of the same principles. The same foundational ideas at NPR is a little bit more on the creative side, whereas marketing is definitely more on the business side. It's housed in the Saunders School of Business Saunders School business here already. So I knew that I wanted to do something a little bit more creative because I love making YouTube videos, and I hadn't ever really had the confidence Thio start posting them or really like dive into that side of my passion. I had in high school was a little bit more reserved, and I didn't want people to like make fun of me or anything like that, So I come into our a t. I was like, I am going Thio dive in head first I'm going to fully engaged in this passion of mine and I was luckily able to do that through my major. So the process of changing your major here rt at least for being in the liberal arts college changing within a college is relatively simple. I met with my old advisers my I NGS major adviser, to talk to her about why I wanted to change my major what I wanted to change it to and then start the paperwork. I wanted to be into change into which was at NPR. So I had to meet with her and talk about why I wanted to change my major. Why that program specifically was the one for me and what made that program like what? Enticing to change into that program like what was exciting me about it? What was I excited to take things like that and she basically just had to approve me to change into the major on that I met with my new advisor, who is still my current advisor, to talk about kind of where we need to go from here because I needed to rework my entire course planning schedule for the next semester. She's super helpful, really, really thankful that I've had those. Resource is I was able to officially declare My major is advertising and public relations, which I feel like at some schools like you're not allowed to declare until your second year. It's this big, scary thing of like, Oh my gosh, I'm declaring my major. Changing my major so early made me really realize that, like if I did want to change my major in the future to something else I could. It's not this big, scary, daunting thing that you don't ever want to do, like changing majors. Okay, that's the beauty of college you can truly like, find yourself and then that I was really able to do here. Alrighty, I found, and was able Thio fully immersed myself into my passions and what I love and what I love to do and what I want to be doing for the rest of my life. In career wise, I was able to truly engage in that and there was so much support to do that that it was just it was not at all a scary process. It was so supported and something that if I do decide to change my major, I know I'll be supported going further. I actually looked into possibly changing my changing my major again this semester. I love the people in my major and I I don't think I would have been able to get the same experience anywhere else besides being here already. So I hope this was a little bit informative and helpful for you guys as Thio, the major changing process, things like that. If you don't end up liking it, you can change your major. Um but we'll try to graduate on time, but change it as many times as you need to so you can truly find yourself. Here I t There are so many opportunities to do that. So many different majors and programs and everything like that. Like you can truly yes, find your academic, but also personal passions here it already.
