Applicant must submit network or cable television film or video (concerned with American history) on an half inch video cassette. Only video programs released January 1 through December 31 are eligible.

Awarded for the best book in American frontier history, including the pioneer periods of all geographical areas and comparisons between American frontiers and others.

Awarded for the best scholarly article published in the Journal of American History during the preceding calendar year (March, June, September, December issues).

Awarded for most original book on the coming of the Civil War, the Civil War years, or the Era of Reconstruction, with the exception of works of purely military history.

Award recognizes books in the field of American social, intellectual, and/or cultural history.

Awarded for the best book on American history published in a foreign language.

Awarded for the best book-length historical study or dissertation on the political economy, politics, or institutions of the U.S., concerning its domestic or international affairs from the Civil War to the present.

Applicant must be a minority and must submit a dissertation project and budget proposal.

Prize is given for the best book written by a historian connected with federal, state, or municipal government, in the areas of foreign policy, military affairs broadly construed, the historical activities of the federal government, or biography in one of the above areas.

Applicant must submit letter of support, table of contents, and sample chapter from dissertation on U.S. women's history.
