University of Michigan Department of Surgery provides us with the tools and the training that we need to be successful. And again, this starts from day one of orientation with mock paging. So we get familiar with the paging system. So we get familiar with triaging, kind of thinking about surgical patients. We've got lots of simulations in our sim center, we've got how to place a chest to central lines, art lines, open skills, lab skills, robotics, skills, endoscopy, you know, and these things get reinforced, you know, every Thursday during our didactic and education protected time. And that kind of leads me right into protected time. You know, I think from the top from the chair of the Department Dr. Dimick, um all the way down to the, you know, the chief residents and the junior residents and seniors, it's expected that we're going to be at education. We are encouraged to be at education every Thursday and the junior attendings, the senior attendings know that we're supposed to be there and are supportive of us being there and you know, I think that that might be an unspoken, that people at other programs might not have the luxury of, meaning that education is protected time, but you also need to be in the operating room and I can assure you that that is not the case here at University of Michigan. Um if you're at the operating room, they're like, don't you have education today, you should probably go to that they're just really supportive of our our education. Another aspect of support which I absolutely am confident that University of Michigan stands head and shoulders above other programs is the amount of advanced practitioner um support that we have here, both nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Um You know each service has got at least one but more likely two, three or four. You know it seems like a small army of advanced practitioners that can support us um in doing fore work and taking care of patients. Um And I think that this is a huge difference and is one of the main reasons that I as an intern I'm able to get into the operating room during the day. Um You know even on nights that I'm on call I'm able to go operate during the day, the APPs are able to take the pager um and then I can go and operate and I take the pager back over with them um you know at three o'clock and they go home and then you know I'm there for the night taking care of patients. Um So I get both patient care and I get to learn how to manage the floor, but I also get a chance to get in the operating room like I talked about earlier and learn how to operate and I know that that is something that definitely stands out at the University of Michigan.
