Welcome to my academic overview of the University of Vermont. The purpose of this video is to give you an introduction to academic life on campus. What coursework looks like, how our structure of our academic schools and colleges really does provide a small school feel at a larger university and also what you can expect as a student in your classes and beyond. Courses look a little bit differently than how they looked in the past, but to provide a little bit of context at u B. M. We are one university. We are one UVM that said were split into seven smaller academic schools and colleges. Based on the discipline that we choose as our major, for example, I study human development and family studies. That means my major is groups within the College of Education and Social Services in our school. It wouldn't necessarily make sense for my major to be offered in the Grossman School of Business because human development and family studies is really inextricably tied to social services work, and therefore we want to work with faculty staff. Community resource is that are going to really help us as human development students hone into our craft. That being said, if you are interested in taking up a major like business administration, it would make sense that you would be in the gross in school of business, because that is where business classes, business professors and the insight and experience that is necessary as a business student can be found, so to provide a little bit more clarity at UVM. Like I said, we have seven academic schools and colleges. They are the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, which is our largest academic unit. So these academic schools and colleges, like I said, we'll inform your experience. Here is a student now, overall, regardless of which academic unit you're placed in, you will be in a class that is around 30 students, at least that is our typical class size here you b m. Of course, if you're in a large lecture environment, you might be surrounded by 100 or 200 of your peers, regardless of the size of your class. Connections with faculty members and teaching assistants are easy to come by, provided that you're willing to make the effort to do so to form those connections. Speaking of faculty, the student of faculty ratio here at UVM is 18 toe one. That means for every 18 students, there is one faculty member on staff, ready and willing to assist and support the students as needed. Another program that I want to take time to mention is actually a partnership between our Department of Residential Life and our academic units here at the University of Vermont, and that is our honors college. Our honors College seeks to admit about 260 students per academic year and is a selective invitation only opportunity for undergraduate students. There is a residential component in addition to a curricular component where students take courses in the pursuit of knowledge, philosophy and other areas that might be interesting to them. These are writing intensive seminars that students could really hone in on their skills as writers, as students, scholars and human beings as a whole. Like I said, the Honors college admits about 260 students. So those 260 students will live together in University Heights North, which is a residential hall on athletic campus. They will also take classes together during their time in the honors college. I also want to mention that just because a student is invited to join the honors college doesn't mean that they can take up other opportunities in other residential learning communities on campus. If a student is admitted into the honors college and then rather live in outdoor experience, they're more than welcome. They will have access to both the outdoor Experience learning community and their home learning community of the honors college, where they will take their course and also engage with those community members and faculty members as well. Academics at UVM also extend into our community as well through service learning courses, internship opportunities across the academic units and more. I love taking classes here at UVM because every environment that I get to go into is a really supportive and also challenging environment. Overall academics here at UVM are really, really ingrained in our culture as a public ivy institution. We put our rigor and expectations to a high standard, and because of that, our students do well not only here at UVM, but regardless of the career path they choose. They do well in the world outside of UPM and after college. One last thing that I also want to mention as a part of this video is our academic advising model. Every college, every academic unit, every school has faculty members that are assigned to be academic advisers to students in their departments, majors or otherwise. Now, these top members are not only there to advise students on what courses to take, so that way they can earn their degree. They're also there to holistically advised them with regards to how their academics are fitting into their whole life. In my experience in the College of Education and Social Services, one of my advisers, Regina Tulin, always checked in with me to see how I was able to fit in my academics with other aspects of my life. She made sure that I was able Teoh have time to eat lunch during the day and take care of myself. I think that is such a worthwhile lesson toe have while we come into college experience life here in college because it's so easy to book our schedules left and right. It's even more important that we're nourishing our bodies, taking care of ourselves and giving ourselves time to be a whole human being outside of class.
